WINTER 1st progress meeting fieldtrip

Some photos from WINTER 1st Progress Meeting field trip on 7th December in Bochum, Germany! Members of the consortium visited the Hoheward Landscape Park and Ewald coal mine, an example of successful land reclamation of former coal mining areas.

The Hoheward Landscape Park, once the largest slag heap of Europe, now includes hiking and cycling trails. The Ewald coal mine (or “colliery”), part of the Hoheward Landscape Park, now includes a business centre, leisure and cultural activities and one of the landmark art installations of the Industrial Heritage Trail – the “Horizon Observatory”.

During the field trip various discussions were held on the environmental, economic and societal impact of the mine closure, land reclamation and changes in land use in the area.
